Super, thanks for the help. I'll try adding the tags you've mentioned
below, and I've also sent an email to the OCM website admin asking what is
the proper way to get a shared use path to render in OCM (if at all).

bicycle=designated is not currently rendered by opencyclemap; it's just
correct tagging for the route you've described. To get it to render
you'll need to use ncn=yes, rcn=yes, or lcn=yes (see below).
bicycle=designated does not mean that only bicycles are allowed there,
only that it is in some way indicated that the route is for bicycles
(e.g. the bicycle symbols painted on the ground you mention, or signs,
or other similar markings).

As far as I know you can just add one of those tags to the way; no need
to create a relation. Perhaps one of the OCM guys can verify or correct
this statement? Obviously you may need to split the way if the bike
route enters/leaves some point in the middle.

Correct tagging and getting it to render properly are unfortunately not
always exactly the same...
