Hi Paul,
that's nothing to do with multi-syllables.
German is multi-syllables in itself.
;-)
We cannot translate this word correctly.
I had a look at the wiki page you sent.
In german it means:
1. vorschlagen - means suggesting...
2. empfehlen - means recommended or advised
3. bestimmen - means 'you must use it', it's no option, you're enforced
At the moment, I understand it as 'designed for...', but that is my personal point of view.
... whereas 'dedicated' means 'widmen'. You can translate it back and forth and it always means the same. (for german, that is)
The 'blue sign with pietons' means that you must use this way. No option.
The white sign beneath, showing a bicycle means optionally for cycle use.
But bicycles may use other ways as to their rider's liking.
So, there ist some need to distinguish between those meanings.
:-)
I could start laughing if it wasn't so trist.
