[OSM-newbies] Installing multiple maps into Mapsource

Yes, there is, but not the way you install them.
The map products for MapSource all have an ID which gets registered in the registry. The same ID can be found in the .img file used as overview map. The size of the overview map .img gets written in the .prj file (or so, I did not learn all this by heart).
So, if you want to give the map a differing Product ID, you have to create the .prj and overview .img file, or you need to patch them binary.
Then you can register the product (using the new ID) in the registry and use the new map product.
I found the way to do all that by downloading computerteddy's .img collection and creating the map product by myself. I can combine the result with the OpenMTB-map and switch between them in MapSource.
I can even select tiles from both products and upload them to my GPSr, but the device does not work with the uploaded map tiles from both maps (it stalls instead).
I checked with MapSource 6.11, 6.13 and Etrex Venture HC or GPSmap 60 CSx.
It all works reliably inside a W2k3 VMware on Ubuntu 8.04.
Newer MapSource versions are picky about map products as I hear.
As by now, I did not find a reason to update anything. I automated the map creation process to have a weekly upgrade. Works fine.
The same process is needed to create the map products you want to install using a sfx archive.
Convince the website's operator to use differing product IDs, then you will get what you want.
Good luck,
Thomas
