[OSM-newbies] Missing POI

I thought a POI of mine had been deleted but it turned out I was looking in
the wrong spot.  :-)  This is why we have maps!

Still, incase it comes up in the future I'm wondering how to investigate.

Let's say in theory a POI is no longer on the map. Could I open an old OSM
file, click the POI and then click history which would tell me what happened
to it after that?

Let's say I didn't have any older OSM files around, how would I find my
missing POI and determine what happened to it?
