[OSM-newbies] Any purpose for both an closed way, and a separate node in the centre?

You have it right. Select node, copy, paste tags to closed way, delete node.

Similarly, if you draw the area as a closed way, remove the node.
Otherwise, I believe it renders twice (once at the node and once at the
centroid of the area).
