[OSM-newbies] Polylines vs Polygons

One of the things I am confused about is how to tell if a way is a polyline with the last node simply equal to the first (track) vs a polygon. Should all areas be tagged with areas="yes" or does it depend on the feature type. For example all highways should be polylines unless area="yes" and all buildings should be considered polygons.
