Note that elevation whether in contours or shading is info outside the OSM
core database, added in the rendering stages of a particular map.
For an alternative paper-quality OSM rendering with topography, see
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/TopOSM
http://toposm.com/
currently implemented for Massachusetts and Colorado only but can be scaled
up with adequate resources.
