[OSM-newbies] The London Loop - Sections 15 to 23

First off I think it would be polite not to include Charles in the
responses. He was involved in a personal discussion with a member of Walk
London and probably didnt expect to get cc'd as part of a mailing list
discussion. Thank God this doesnt look like being one of the long heated
discussion. I am going to write a separate detailed email to Walk London at
the weekend.

I am one of the 'London Mappers' with a keen interest in adding paths and I
have done a bit of work on the London Loop and other London Walking Routes.
Maps of paths are a real weakness in other available maps and should be a
strength of OSM.

The questions asked by Charles are relevant. When your walking away from the
roads the location of fences and hedgerows are key features, but up to now
we haven't been mapping them. Its clearly something that needs to be worked
on.

It's also important for Walk London and other users to understand there is a
difference between OSM and 'mapnik map' you see on the website.

The osm mapnik map does not render hedges/fences etc at the zoom level used
by Walk London, which is a perfectly reasonable zoom level to use for
printing off maps. I assume this can be easily changed as there is no reason
for mapnik not to render fences,hedgelines at that zoom level.
Osm mapnik does not appear to render stiles/kissing gates (etc) that have
been added to paths, this type of data is key selling feature of OSM.

I had a look in the osm mapnik website a while back and it appears that
anyone can make edits to the way osm mapnik stylesheet(?), but it was way to
complicated for me to even try.

Mapnik cant be 'everything to everyone' and there is an argument for an
"OpenWalkingMap", but I think mapnik is suitable for Walk London's needs
when hedgelines are mapped plus a couple of rendering tweaks.

I am on Walk London's mailing list and last year recieved an email asking
for people to 'adop't a section of route. The idea being to create a group
of people who could keep an eye on sections of the route and forward info to
Walk London (another type of crowdsourcing). I'll suggest to Walk London
that these people should be made aware of OSM, if a few were willing to edit
the map they would solve the problems brought up by Charles
