Here's the stylesheet used for the Mapnik-flavor slippy map on OSM's website:
<http://trac.openstreetmap.org/browser/applications/rendering/mapnik/osm.xml>
It may seem really hard to read at first, but eventually you may find
it just moderately hard to read. That file tells the Mapnik renderer
how to draw various features, and at what zoom levels to draw them.

The Osmarender-flavor slippy map uses a stylesheet broken into several
files by zoom level. They can be browsed here:
<http://trac.openstreetmap.org/browser/applications/rendering/osmarender/stylesheets>

If you can make sense of those, then you've got a good starting point
for your zoom/detail decisions.
