Don't knock them! Where I map there is no aerial imagery and I have had
to to 3 or 4 areas about a mile across completely from scratch. I only
have a GPRS enabled phone too.
Recently in the UK we've had detailed maps released from the Ordnance
Survey that we can trace over, and I was quite impressed by the accuracy
of the original traces. I've made some minor changes because I have a
better source now, but the original layouts were perfectly acceptable as
they were.
I use a Nokia N79 running Whereami (although Sportstracker works fine
too). As long as it's kept level and moving on a bike or car then it's
great. On foot, under trees or around buildings it's rubbish!
You could check the general accuracy of your phone by converting your
traces to kml format and having a look at Google Earth for comparison, at
least you'll get to know when it's good and when it's bad.

I joined the openstreetmap recently and have been using the LanSat
and Yahoo imagery as the basis of making road maps. But the
resolution of the maps is poor for my location here in India. So guys
is there anyway to get any other source of areial imagery thats good
? And Is there any way to find lat and longs without GPS device?. Since
GPS devices are too big for my budget in my country, i am working
without any such device. All i have is a GPRS enabled cell phone. Any
innovative ideas guys
