I'm not sure I understand your question correctly, but you can find
the history of data in openstreetmap-

the way I know is;
go into edit mode in potlatch;
select a way or node;
click on "advanced" in the lower left of the screen
choose "history"
there it will tell you when the way was last modified, and in the
dropdown, all the modifications.  There's a "mail" button that enables
you to email the editor of that change, and you can ask that person
where the data came from.

In addition some ways are tagged as to source.  It's a good idea to
tag your own edits that way, too, so the next person knows what data
you were working from.
