[OSM-newbies] gmaptool

I'm not sure if this question fits the newbies list, but it's a good tip
that I never knew about and others may be interested in.

I'm trying to use gmaptool to combine the output of mkgmap using different
styles. Sometimes I want to seek out unnamed streets and look for signs, at
other times I just want to get around. mkgmap has an option --style=noname
that will make the noname style map for use on the device, but it's missing
a lot of POI and is ugly. On the other hand leaving out the --style option
gets a nice looking default style map which is useful for everyday stuff.

So I tried using gmaptool to combine both IMG files and be able to swap
between them on my Garmin Legend HCx. It works! But... it seems there's
many sections of the map, dozens of them and I can't just turn one or the
other off, I have to manually check or uncheck lots of little pieces of the
map.

Am I doing it wrong?
