[OSM-newbies] Tagging Rail Yards

When tagging rail yards, I'm tagging all of the siding tracks as railway:rail, service:yard.  Is it appropriate to try to locate the "main line" going through the yard and *not* tag that as service:yard?  Render-wise this would create the appearance of, if nothing else, a main line heading through the yard for trains not stopping. However, I've discovered that it's sometimes very difficult to trace a single main line through a yard, as it invariably has to branch off at some point to connect to the line exiting the yard.
