[OSM-newbies] Evolution of edits of a region alà itoworld

What are you visualizing?  A map that would start out showing the status as of the start of the year, then show the edits taking place, in chronological order?  Probably the easiest way to so this would be to render a whole series of maps, each going up to a particular date, then merge these images into a video sequence, like a time-lapse video showing a plant growing.  You would probably need to render these maps yourself, as the standard map-rendering servers are set up to show the map as of now, not at some point in the past.  I don't know if such an application already exists.
