I _do_ think it's useful for marking specific features that are, for 
whatever reason, defined under the landuse key (e.g. cemetery, landfill, 
quarry).

I also find it useful to define the border of a named housing development, 
commercial business park, or shopping area, causing it to be shown in 
contrast on the map as well as named. I also add it to a site-type relation 
with a role of "boundary".
