  This page give one example:

https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/InstallNotes

But more specifically, here's my example on Win7:

"C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe"
-Djosm.home="./Settings-Tested" -Xmx4096M -jar josm-tested.jar

  (all one line)

The memory part is '-Xmx4096M', which allocates 4G to JOSM. I only
load large files rarely; normally you can work with only 512M or 1024M max.

I run multiple versions of JOSM with their own settings and plugins,
so the -Djosm.home="./Settings-Tested" statement stores those settings
in a subfolder "./Settings-Tested".
