Wikipedia has never prioritised popularity over its core values. And I 
can't imagine any of its board members suggesting that proprietary 
software might be OK/needed/whatever in future.

Most people don't care how Wikipedia works, but that doesn't stop how 
it works being part of its tag line. Or being what drives the value 
enjoyed by those who don't care.
