Just for the benefit of those who were not around "a few planets ago", 
let me say that I merely rescued this design from some mailing list post 
even further in the past. I am not the author. I don't remember who did 
it originally but this design is almost as old as the project itself.

Which doesn't mean that the idea of "no map on the front page" is in any 
way bad; openstreetmap.de has only just switched to such a design.
