By the way, the new OpenLayers 3.0 is really impressive. It has got a new visual design and a full screen control.

The mobile version of the OSM is also becoming quite impressive and useable.

I would also agree that it could be useful to study how Wikipedia, PHP, JS, etc. communities are trying to address the gender-gap issue. As it is not an easy problem.
