I just read this article: "Charities:Don't Thank Your Donors with a
Gift." at:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/rogerdooley/2012/08/08/donor-gifts/#15502e274262

-- QUOTE --
"...thank-you gift can actually reduce contributions ...
A paper in the Journal of Economic Psychology, The counterintuitive
effects of thank-you gifts on charitable giving,
describes a series of experiments that show that, contrary to
expectations, rewarding contributors cuts donations in most circumstances.
Contrary to predictions, rewarding donors cut contributions.
The Yale researchers who conducted the study, George Newman and Jeremy
Shen, found that the most likely reason for the negative effect on
contributions was “crowding out.”

Another interesting article at the website of the Association of Donor
Relations Professionals "Best Practices in Donor Recognition":
http://www.adrp.net/assets/documents/bestpractices/adrp_best_practices-donor_recognition.pdf

I see that this is a domain for professionals, a common sense is
absolutely not enough, the same as say doing a work of a medical doctor
or a pilot just with a common sense.

Best regards,
Oleksiy
