[Osmf-talk] Galileo operational

Hi (special at @Simon),

I have used the latest update of the GPS tool on my Android Samsung Tab 2. The Apps name is: GPS Status & Toolbox. It states in their latest update: “Celebrate the start of EU’s Galileo system”.

If I look at the screen, I see the usual round dots for the GPS system and now additonally squares with an r in front of the numbers. Those are the ones I never saw before. I assume that that are Galileo sattelites. I have a fix on 6 squares and 4 or 5(just above the horizon) which don’t get a fix.

The same app on my Samsung 5 mini does not show this picture with squares (sofar I hope).

My best guess is that the more recent tab has already received the update that the chipset can be read out with Galileo data, while the phone does not.

I have also checked my Orgeon 600 (18 months in my possesoin), which supposedly should have a Galileo prepared chipset, but that does not show the same result. So I hope that Garmin is working on a firmware update for my Oregon 600 as well,

Regards, Hugo

Have you actually checked that you are receiving Galileo sat signals (by for example using one of the apps that show NMEA output from the chipset)? Given that only 11 satellites are operational it seems rather unlikely that you would be able to achieve a Galileo only fix (which would likely be required for any improvement in accuracy) for any longer period.

As of today the European position sattalite system Galileo is operational. Should improve the accuracy from the mapping with relatively new GPS apparatusses substantially. My Samsung Tab 2 does improve to less than 3 m, but my Samsung S5 mini does not .
