To avoid any misunderstanding: the policy is a codification and
clarification of what we consider acceptable use without a licence and a
guide to what to do if the usage of our trademarks does not fit within
the borders of allowed usage without an explicit licence.
Before the introduction of the policy, every use, except those allowed
by relevant legislation, required a licence.
And to nip the usual rampant whatboutism in the bud. We have a long
history of stopping clear misuse of our trademarks both before and after
the policy was put in force. Luckily this has never required formal
legal action as most people are reasonable about these things (with the
exception of a number of scam apps that we've had taken down) and simply
didn't consider that they may be causing confusion about the provenance
of their products and services.
