As for Google Maps, they also do some interesting things. For example, 
an attempt to create the universal addressing system. Or a possibility 
to add an aerial panorama to the map.

There are countries where the government cooperates with the OSM 
productively, for example, providing the postal addresses from its 
databases, the aerial imagery, etc.

I think that building the cooperation and good relations with 
governments and the commercial maps would benefit all sides. The maps, 
both the OSM and the commercial maps, are still very far from perfect 
(to put it mildly). The task of creating the good map is not trivial, 
and it would require joint efforts.

At the same time, I agree that the OSM should not be viewed just as a 
hobbyist project, the same as say the Wikipedia, the Apache httpd 
server, etc. These projects turned into kind of foundation pillars, for 
the lack of a better word.
