> But importantly, not to annul their votes.
Where does the proposal say anything about annulling votes?
> So far we have one side saying we need to amend the AoA, and the other side (consisting, I note, of prominent employees of large corporations) saying that it's all fine, or it's too late, or we should have done it differently but let's run this coming election as-is. This doesn't fill me with confidence.
That's not even accurate about the "sides". Nor about what I am saying, for one. This kind of suspicion is exactly the thing I'm worried about will gain steam with this hastily developed proposal. Sucks to see me and others painted this way.
To be clear for me -- which I am saying as an OSMF Board Member and heavily invested community member of 15 years ...
Do I think OSMF is an attractive takeover target? 100%
Do I think we should do something about it? Absolutely.
Are we talking about the right risks and the right protections? Nope
This amendment is a confusing symbolic gesture unrooted in real risk assessment. My opinion is that it probably can't hurt, if actually done with some thorough work.
At the very least, any kind of amendment needs thorough work, and that hasn't been done. This has been a very busy Board in 2020. Yet, even the smallest policy work has gone through community consultation, proper deliberation and consideration of all points of view, and series of editing and feedback and more editing. And when appropriate, a legal review.
Here we're talking about suggesting modifications to our fundamental organizational documents. And addressing pretty tricky things. Almost on the fly. It's seriously disappointed to see such a rush. There's no emergency reason for it -- the OSMF Board has had zero indication that there has been any risk of purchased votes for the coming election.
In short, let's take a breath and do this right.
