Alternatives:
* pkpass file for wallet apps
* pdf
* jpg
Example of my “Alpenverein Mitgliedskarte” (Alpine Club membership card):

I personally prefer the plastic card, but there are print shops ...

The problem I see is simply, "Who is going to do the work of producing plastic membership cards, then mailing them out annually?" The MWG is like all working groups a small set of volunteers who run the MWG in their spare time and I have yet to hear from its members that they would be willing to add this to the MWG's task list. And even then, a plastic membership card is IMHO unlikely to quell paranoia any better than a self-printed business card would.
Another approach to this problem is for the OSMF board to authorize community members to use the OSM logo for customizing surveyor's vests and then wearing them while collecting data. On-line retailers offer them for competitive (=low) prices. Wearing surveyor's vests while collecting data would allay the concerns of most (but certainly not all) suspicious and paranoid neighbors.

What keeps one from first paying a few euros for an official annual
OSMF membership, waiting for the plastic card to arrive by mail and
only _then_ doing photography for their terrorist activities? The
answer is nothing and that this conversation isn't heading in the
right direction. I still believe my suggestion was the best so far.
