All, the upcoming fundraising campaign is looking to first support our current obligations for our site reliability engineer, iD maintainer, and _all_ of the infrastructure that makes all of OSM run. Our growth objectives are to expand coverage on our system administration team, unlock development on the main openstreetmap website, meet mapper needs with more flexible vector tile infrastructure, and invest in the greater OSM software ecosystem.
Steve, I know it's maybe hard to listen with the distraction of Hunter Biden on your mind. But I have an idea. Next time, let's talk before you email all of OSMF. I'm really happy to give you my full attention and then maybe we don't have to look silly on the mailing lists.
Our fundraising campaign is not focused on expanding tile access. Most of our tile distribution is handled by our generous sponsorship by Fastly, the volume has little impact on our rendering servers. OSMF tile usage policy does not allow anyone to use tiles however they want. Overuse and out of bounds use is actively managed by the OWG.
Hope we can get some time together in person at State of the Map US Steve. I have some ideas and I'm truly excited to figure things out with you.

The OSMF is seeking massive new funding while at the same time operating a global minutely updated tileserver for the entire world to use for free. It's important to note that keeping this updated (for the entire world, for free) is itself painful and expensive compared to caching the tiles.
Today, bidenlaptopmedia.com, perhaps the United States most visited website in the last 6 hours, is now using OSMF managed tiles for free.
Could we rethink this and instead limit tiles to editors, instead of seeking to expand an already free service which has plenty of commercial competition? That way, resources could be used on things that benefit OSM.
Surely potential donors will quickly realize that asking for money to expand global free services is a bottomless pit and not a very fundable proposition?
Best
Steve
