If you live at places like this then always download the document, add your
name and OSM account URL bold (maybe your email address as well) in the
middle and a small black & white photo in a corner before printing it out.
If you are a regular mapper in an area, print sheets where that area is
highlighted on a map (perhaps the back side of the flyer) with a note that
you are the local maintainer of the map. Otherwise you could similarly draw
a GPX path overlay of your next trip (for example if you are doing a
mapping party or a longer journey around new neighborhoods). I wish you
could download something like this generated from osm.org directly.
But also, how did the police know where to find you? What did you tell them?
It is not illegal to be mapping in most countries. However, that taking
photographs of people and private property is actually not unrestricted in
most countries.
