which e.g. Gitlab has much better support support for, and Github has 
not been doing anything on for years now.

For my day job (not OSM related) I'm bound to using Github, but for 
everything else I'd be happy to move to a more open and less (IMHO)
annoying repository management platform

PS: I agree to several of the "philosophical" points listed, too,
     just wanted to add something "more practical"
