I planned to do sth. for this tomorrow:

Download the current europe.osm.bz2, convert it to pbf.
Download the current europe.osm.pbf

Check their file-sizes. I'd be happy to provide the files for further 
tests once they're up. I'd do the conversion on a 32bit WinXP Intel Machine.

I'll keep the files in case other/more tests are needed.
