Hi,

There is a *lot* of open source code out there that does this already,
or at least parts of this:

* Multipolygon builder in Jochen's Osmium
* Multipolygon builder in ImpOSM
* Multipolygon builder in osm2pgsql
* Multipolygon builder in osm2ogr

(all implementations are completely separate)

Also osm2pgsql has code to build linear geometries for routes, and I
expect some of the others as well. There's also potentially reusable
code from Lonvia who uses, as far as I know, a pgsnapshot database to
compute hiking route geometries.

Bye
Frederik
