[OSRM-talk] impact of gaps parameter set to split in match service

Hi,
I'm using the match service to snap GPS traces to city roads. With gaps
parameter set to ignore, I noticed that some segments of response are not
snapped to the roads but "cut between streets diagonally". Increasing
radius does not change something to this impossible behavior (impossible
for car profile at least). At the opposite, setting gaps to split has the
effect that points are now snapped to roads (no diagonal shortcuts).

Question:
Why does gaps parameter set to split change something to the choice of the
most plausible way (no more diagonal shortcuts in my example)? I thought
that the only effect of split was to split a route in subroutes where
timestamps show too much time elapsed between relatively close consecutive
points?

Thanks
Patrick
