[Outdoor-natural] Newbie Question on Splitting a Way

Hi,
Editing on OPM using iD editor to map out Cross-Country ski trails. Issue is that many ski trails use Forest Roads. Not sure what steps I need to take to avoid superimposing. I have gotten the idea that I need to split the way. 

Any possibility that you could direct me to an example with a hiking or other trail.
