I'm struggling to find another example - every one I try now works - sods
law, but I am pretty sure there are others, it took me a while to figure out
what was happening.

I'm pretty sure it is not relation related as I too have successfully joined
in most combinations, so I come back to is it data related?  I have no idea
how to interrogate the DB to have a look for oddities.
