It works fine for me (using the latest code: this has changed a bit 
recently).

If I go to the instance at www.geowiki.com, type in "Crawley, 
Oxfordshire" for the placename, start editing, and load the GPX from 
http://www.openstreetmap.org/api/0.6/gpx/799328/data.xml , I get it in a 
thin blue line - the GPX style. I can then change this to any style in 
the menu.

Could you say what you're doing so I can try and reproduce it?
