Hi Joe. To split a way, you just click on the node you want to split
it at, and press X. Do you remember what you tried? Were you maybe
drawing a way at the time?
I use this feature quite a lot and I haven't had any issues, but it
could be something to do with the way you were using it.

Yeah, that's a known issue.

You can press "R" on a way/node and it will copy all the properties
from the last way/node. Of course that will include the name=* but it
still might save you time.
You can also now select a bunch of ways (hold ctrl to select them) and
set the properties en masse.
