I also noticed last night that it can make Flash crash on syntax
errors in the CSS. (Also, using "way[!foo=bar]" caused an
exception...)

Sounds good. I think a conservative, but very broad stylesheet would
actually be pretty usable:
way[highway] {...}
way[landuse] {...}
way[waterway] {...}
