 Hmm, in my tests, either segment [1,2] goes red, or [3,4] goes red - but
 never the bit in between. Either way, it seems to be a bug.

 Anyway, one question to resolve: should the highlighted object always show
 above other objects? That is, should it temporarily be raised to the
 highest layer?
