After making this statement, I got curious about how many projects
that I've worked with have those "Travis-style" status badges on them.
 A quick look shows Travis build status on the github READMEs of
Mapnik, Cucumber, Capybara, RailsAdmin, SimpleCov, DatabaseCleaner,
and Rails itself.  Some also report dependency status using Gemnasium.

Trend or fad, I can't say.
