 @nelg: as a workaround, currently, you could use e.g.
 http://owl.apis.dev.openstreetmap.org/ to view the map. The tiles are the
 same. There you also, currently, still have the zoom bar (which I like,
 too … feels not being lost that much). However, zooming with the mouse
 wheel is equally fast there for me (Firefox).
