"Fixing" the routers is likely out of scope given that they are not products of the OSMF. Naturally, just as with 3rd party tile layers the EWG/OWG might want to set some minimum standards (gracefully handling the case in question for example). But given that at least graphhopper does it, this it not a show stopper.
As TomH says we need to come to a conclusion wrt to the larger UI issue first (and I would very much support further developement of @jfirebaugh original UI solution).
