Well that amounts to the same thing as providing an API for messages, except that an API would be more secure.

Note that the system used for replying to diary comments and messages by email deliberately uses addresses that are tied to a specific message so that they can't be guessed or spammed and that would be harder to do for a generic address of the type you are proposing.
