..unless you are in the UK. In that case avoid using feet - nobody uses
feet for linear distances on the road but they are used for e.g.
height/width restrictions.
IMHO the scientific accuracy is secondary to the recognisability/clarity
of the instruction in this case. Rounding / approximating to "half a
mile", or "quarter of a mile" would be excellent. Below that its yards -
200y, 100y, 50y, 20y, 10y.
