I'm going to split the conversation into two parts:
> We also use a lot of open source software like ruby, rails, mapnik, Leaflet, etc. that do not formally require attribution. It would still be nice to list them somewhere.
We use 192 different ruby gems currently, so any attempt to thank them all will have to be auto-generated. We also depend on a bunch of other software, from postgresql through to all the underlying OS libraries and packages. Should we thank the developers of hundreds of Ubuntu packages? Or where would we draw the line? I think by trying to thank everyone equally we would end up thanking nobody.
> The OSM foundation also relies on a few external companies, most of which we do not, afaik, publicly mention anywhere.
I think that it would be appropriate for those to live elsewhere, on the foundation website for example. It feels out of scope for this repository.
