@tomhughes : thanks a lot for the review.  I'm happy that my initial approach wasn't completely off and I haven't missed anything really obvious in the Rails framework.

@simon04 : thanks a lot for the quick fix! While going through your changes, I noticed that CGimap wasn't handling application/xml as expected. This triggered a follow on patch in https://github.com/zerebubuth/openstreetmap-cgimap/pull/221.
