Can you describe more of the performance and scalability issues here? Elsewhere, I find the stitching-and-cropping-tiles approach works reasonably well. 

For the OG preview images, I would guess that it's only a (comparatively) small amount of traffic. Each preview would involve ~4 tile requests, some CPU to stitch+crop, and the output image could be cached too.
