Hmm, I'll need to think about the best way to do this. Might be better off in the html generated by the image_tag calls in https://github.com/openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website/blob/master/app/helpers/user_helper.rb to handle non-square images. Or else, reserve a maximum space for the image, but without accidentally stretching it by setting an incorrect width on the image.
