I'd call that a workaround rather than a solution, personally. It does allow developers to avoid downloading all the large blobs, but at the cost of more complexity (in install instructions etc). 

A solution would be to avoid having to deal with these large blobs at all (since they aren't managed in this repo, they are just build artefacts from other projects).
