I've come across https://github.com/byroot/frozen_record today, which is really interesting - creating read-only models from yaml and json files, so at a high level it's what we're looking for. I'll have a look and think about whether it will help, since we don't have a one-to-one mapping between the layout of the data in the json files and the structure of the data that we need. But it could be promising.
