Here's another use case where this solution could have a prevented a lot of grief:

Due to the current state in Israel a huge vandalism was caused by newly created users who remove tons of data from Tel Aviv and currented a lot of other places.
OSM volunteers are now trying to revert these vandalism acts, but it not easy not fast :-((
