> Your original description of _Option 4b_ didn't include implementing preferences, it had "we shouldn't control those colours in dark mode", that's completely different now. It even looks like you agree to change this too: "We don't control what colours are used on the maps in light mode". That's what you'll get if there's an option for the map mode independent of the ui mode.

I think I'm still being consistent here. If there is an option to show dark maps with a light UI, my proposal would be to show whatever the cartographers think should be shown for their "dark mode map".

For example, let's say that the cartographers have all made their decisions on how they want to implement "dark mode map" for their layers:

| Map Style | Light Mode cartography | Dark Mode cartography |
|---|---|---|
| Style A | tile-url-A | tile-url-A (no change) |
| Style B | tile-url-B | filter-combination-B (dark effect) |
| Style C | tile-url-C | tile-url-C2 (dark effect) |

We can then implement preferences to allow users to choose between dark and light mode for the maps, but the cartographers are still choosing exactly what colours are shown for each.

I can clarify this - I mean that we don't choose what colours are used inside the maps when showing the light mode maps. I also think we should not choose what colours are used inside the maps when showing the dark mode maps. That's not incompatible with saying that users should get the choice whether to see dark mode maps or light mode maps independently of dark mode UI and light mode UI. I think the cartographers should control everything inside of their maps, but that doesn't mean that we can't allow users to choose which one to show.
